Birth: Sep. 24, 1812
Kentucky, USA
Death: Nov. 7, 1905
Clark County
Missouri, USA

John Bennett was the son of Ezekiel Bennett, Sr. (1795-1846) and Sarah Sally (Tye) Bennett who were married June 9, 1812 in Knox County, Kentucky.

It is believed that John had at least two full siblings, Charity Bennett born in 1822 and James Bennett born in 1823, and there may have been more. It is unknown when John Bennett's mother died, but we do know that John's father Ezekiel Bennett, Sr. married Lydia Asbell in Kentucky on November 8, 1827. Ezekiel and Lydia had 4 known children while living in Kentucky, John's half-siblings:

Fielding Dick Bennett 1828-1900
Mary Polly Bennett 1830-1892
Maletha "May" Bennett 1833-1913
Amos Bennett 1834-1917

The Bennetts also raised another girl as their daughter named Arvelee (Asbell) Winkler (1818-1877) who was probably related to Lydia.

In the mid-1830s, the Bennetts began preparing to move to the frontiers of Missouri. They sold their farm near Richmond in Madison County, Kentucky, which was in view of the mountain called Joe's Lick Knob.

Family history says that Ezekiel took his two oldest sons, John and James Bennett to Missouri to stake out a claim in Macon County, Missouri and may have built a log home for the family at that time.

In about 1836, a large group of settlers traveled from Kentucky to Missouri, which included the Bennetts and many of their relatives. The Bennetts set up their farming operation in Macon County, Missouri, where they had staked their claim. John's father and step-mother had three more children while living in Macon County, including a set of twins who died of diphtheria when they were around 1 year of age:

Joseph Bennett 1836-1837
Nancy Bennett 1836-1837
Paulina Bennett 1840-1928

The Bennetts are listed in Macon County, Missouri, in the 1840 census. Only the head of household, Ezekiel Bennett, is named in this census; and the number of males and females are shown in specified age categories. Ezekiel and Lydia had 3 sons and 4 daughters in this census.

Son John Bennett was not included in the household at this time because he had married Rhoda Evans on April 11, 1839 in Macon County, Missouri, as verified by county marriage records.

In about 1843, John Bennett's father and step-mother and half-siblings moved from Macon County north to Schuyler County, Missouri. Again it was said that Ezekiel Bennett and his sons John and James Bennett went ahead to stake out a claim in the new county and perhaps build a house there before the family moved. It is unknown whether John and Rhoda also moved to Schuyler County or not as they cannot be found in the 1850 census.

John's father and step-mother had their last child while living in Schuyler County:

Ezekiel Bennett, Jr. 1843-1919

John's father died in that county in 1846. He is buried in New Harmony Cemetery near Greentop, Missouri.

John and Rhoda had the following known children:

James H. Bennett 1843-
Mary or May J. (Bennett) Casky 1844-
John F. Bennett 1846-
Alice Amanda Ann Bennett 1849-
Samantha Alice (Bennett) Riffel 1853-1925
Charles Wesley Bennett 1856-1884
Ida Belle (Bennett) McDaniel 1862-1902

Sometime before 1856, John and Rhoda Bennett moved to Vernon Township of Van Buren County, Iowa. A special Iowa census taken in that year shows John Bennett age 48 [probably should be 44], farmer, wife Rhoda 36, and 6 children. The first 3 children had been born in Missouri and the last 3 in Iowa. That sets the time of the Bennetts' move to Iowa between 1846 and 1859.

In the 1860 federal census, the John Bennett family was living in the same location in Iowa. John was listed as 48, Rhoda 42, and there were 5 children in the home.

By the time of the 1870 census, the family had returned to Missouri and were residing in Johnson Township of Scotland County. John was listed as 58, wife Rhoda 52, and 3 children were in the home, Alice 17, Charles Wesley 13, and Ida 8.

In 1880, they were living in the same location in Missouri. John was 69, a farmer, Rhoda 62, and two children were still at home, Charles 21, and Ida 18.

Sadly, Charles Wesley Bennett died at the age of 27 on February 15, 1884 (verified by his tombstone) and was buried at Bethlehem Cemetery in Clark County, Missouri. Rhoda died on February 22, 1890, according to her tombstone, and was buried in the same cemetery.

In the 1900 census, John Bennett was living in Kahoka City, Clark County, Missouri. He was shown as age 87 and widowed, living with his daughter May J. (Bennett) Casky, age 54, her husband A. M. Casky 60, and their children Ray 21, and Rhoda 18.

John died on November 7, 1905, according to the dates on his tombstone, and is buried beside Rhoda in Bethlehem Cemetery.

- Written by Blytha (Dennis) Ellis, great great niece of John Bennett, through his half-sister Paulina (Bennett) Thurman who was my great grandmother.

My great grandmother Paulina who resided on a farm in Macon County, Missouri, told the story of once meeting her half-brother at the train station in Macon, Missouri, but she did not know him as it had been so long since she had seen him. I believe she was referring to John Bennett because her other half-brother James Bennett lived closer and she would have seen him more often.
