He was born Edward Wike Sutton and played at the halfback and defensive back positions for four seasons (1957 to 1960) in the National Football League with the Washington Redskins and New York Giants. He enjoyed his most successful season in 1957 with Washington, when he rushed for 407 yards scoring 5 touchdowns. A multi-sport athlete during his collegiate years at the University of North Carolina, Sutton excelled at basketball and track as well as football. He was chosen by the Redskins in the 3rd round of the 1957 NFL Draft and appeared in 45 career games. He received a medical degree from the University of Tennessee and served at a M*A*S*H* unit during the Vietnam War. Sutton was inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 1999. He died from complications following heart bypass surgery.
