Judging from the fact that he appeared in the 1920 census as "Edward V. Cabbage", it is probable that he was named after his father, and that his mother changed his name after her divorce.
His wife said that Edward never liked the name Edwin, and I have evidence of that in documents in which he used the name Edward, which is why I have listed his name as I have.
Edward attended McKendree College (now University) in Lebanon for 2 1/2 years, majoring in sociology. He was still living at home at this time; he dropped out of school and left home without telling anyone that he was going. His mother located him when a prospective employer (the WPA) contacted McKendree for information. He had applied for employment as, and was employed as, an interviewer of farmers applying for relief.
After returning to Illinois, he was eventually employed as an electrician by the Home Telephone Co. in St. Jacob..
Died at the hospital in Mt. Olive of pneumonia.
