| Birth: | Dec. 8, 1864 Fere-en-Tardenois, France | | Death: | Oct. 19, 1943, France | Sculptor. The older sister of Paul Claudel, French poet and diplomat. She had a controversial relationship with her teacher, mentor and lover, Auguste Rodin; by working as his apprentice, she had the chance to study the nude figure, an unusual opportunity for a woman in the 19th century. She modeled hands and feet for Rodin's "Burghers of Calais" and posed for figures in his "Gates of Hell". Her own sculptures are notable for their strength and refinement. From 1905 Claudel exhibited signs of mental instability and in 1913 she was committed to Montdevergues, a mental asylum in Montfavet, where she remained the last 30 years of her life. She was buried at the cemetery in Montfavet by a priest and a few nuns; no relatives were present. After a few years her remains were removed to a charnel house at the same cemetery. Although she destroyed much of her work, about 90 of her statues and other artworks survive. (bio by: Andy A.)
