Beatrice Hope (Conaway) Coy was born Sept. 9, 1911 to Edwin Ray Conaway and Flossie Pearl (Woodward) Conaway. The second daughter of four daughters born to Ray and Flossie, she was the Valedictorian of McLuney School, Crooksville, OH, Class of 1929.
She pursued a career in Retail Sales Management prior to her marriage to Gerald H. Coy.
During her junior year at McLuney, she substituted as the teacher of the first graders for over a four month period when she was only 16-years-old.
Actively involved in community affairs, Bea and her sisters
(Eva, Martha and Amy) were a well known and sought after singing group in Perry County, OH.
Following her graduation from high school, Bea studied at the Franklin University School of Business in Columbus, OH. Later, she studied Business Management at the University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati, OH, and she was a graduate of the Howard Parish Classified Advertising School of Miami, FL.
Bea's desire was to attend Asbury College in Kentucky to study to become a missionary, but because of the Depression, church scholarship funds were not available.
Her management career spanned three states: Ohio, Illinois, and New York.
She started her retail sales work with the Greene Company in Columbus, OH. Then her work took her to the Hamilton Milk Company (a subsidiary of Borden's Milk), Columbus, OH, where she was a Comptometer Operator; the Schillito Department Store (a branch of the Lazarus Company) in Cincinnati, OH, where she was an Assistant Buyer; Mandel Brothers in Chicago, IL, where she was an Assistant Buyer; The Dixie Dress Shoppe in Galesburg, IL, where she was the Manager; Namms Department Store in Brooklyn, NY, where she managed Retail Sales; The Modern Dress Shop in Crooksville, OH, where she and her sister, Amy, owned, operated and managed their own business; and the Advertising Department of the New Kensington, PA, DAILY DISPATCH, where she was a Circulation Research Manager.
After she married, she gave up her career to devote her time to being a housewife and mother.
She left behind her husband of 53 years, two sons, a daughter, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
