Mary Ann Short was a native of Georgia, born in 1827. She was only 14 years of age when she married Martin Doll on 5 Dec 1841 at Fort Gibson in Indian Territory. Mary Ann and Martin had two children, Sarah Elizabeth (Spaulding) born 1842 and George born 1844.
Martin, a native of Pennsylvania, was a Private with Co G 1st US Cavalry 1st Dragoons. He enlisted in 1837 and re-enlisted in 1840. Martin served at Fort Gibson and Fort Wayne in Indian Territory, Fort Croghan in Iowa Territory, and died at Fort Leavenworth. Martin died from injuries received when he was kicked in the head by a horse.
Mary Ann married Simon Hooper on 4 Feb 1847 at Fort Leavenworth. Simon also served with the 1st US Cavalry 1st Dragoons, but with Co K. He was a veteran of the Mexican War and the Civil War.
Mary Ann and Simon stayed at Fort Leavenworth until 1852 when Simon was discharged after completing 10 years of service. While living at Fort Leavenworth, they had two children: Martha born 1848 and John born 1851. They moved to Fremont County, Iowa after his discharge and had four more children: Marietta (Smalley), Josephine "Dora" (Stow), Alice Purmelia (Elledge), and Minnie (Hice).
Simon died in 1893 at the age of 73 years. After Simon's death, Mary Ann lived with her daughter, Minnie Hice. She died in 1905 at the age of 78 years 8 days.
