Lionel Hugh Fletcher, Electrician's Mate, Third Class Service Number 291 43 55. Lionel was born in Darlington, Indiana, but was from San Diego, California when he joined the Navy. Decorations Submarine USS Squalus (SS-192)
Lionel Fletcher was an Electricians Mate on the newly commissioned USS Squalus (SS192) which sank during test trials off Portsmouth, NH near the Isle of Shoals on May 23, 1939. In an heroic rescue effort over the next two days, 33 men were rescued using a diving bell from the sunken submarine mired in the mud 240 feet below the surface.
Unfortunately, Lionel Fletcher was among 26 crewmen who lost their lives from the water that rapidly flooded the after compartments of the Squalus through the main induction valve which malfunctioned during their dive.
He is buried at San Francisco National Cemetery at the Presidio. Section EE Site 1196.
