Hermese Abbott Thiess peacefully passed away on September 21, 2008 of Causes Incident to Age. She resided at 513 North 120 West in Lindon, Utah at the time of her death.
She was born the second of 11 children in Delta, Utah on September 15, 1918 to George Nathan and Rosa Leanora Gardner Abbott. She was raised in Bunkerville, Nevada, and began her freshman year at Dixie College at age 16. She moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1935, where she worked to provide support for her family during the illness of her mother. She married William Haymond Thiess in Bunkerville on May 29, 1938. Their marriage was solemnized in the St. George Temple in 1953. They lived in Las Vegas for 58 years where they raised their family, prior to moving to Lindon, Utah in 1993. An accomplished pianist and organist, Hermese played in a dance band in college and was a frequently sought after accompanist by many singers, singing groups and church choirs over several decades. Music was always an important part of her life, and her musical talents blessed many lives. She was an exceptional cook, and her recipes were in much demand. The wonderful aroma of fresh baked bread, cinnamon rolls and orange rolls was a lifelong tradition in her kitchen.
Descended from pioneer heritage through the Robert Gardner and William Snow lines, Hermese was an active member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers (DUP) for several years. A faithful and devoted member of the LDS Church throughout her life, she served faithfully in many church callings. She and her husband were temple ordinance workers in both the Las Vegas and Mt. Timpanogos Temples. She was known throughout her life for her many acts of service and kindness, and was a model of beauty and graciousness. Her greatest love and joy was her family, including six children, 24 grandchildren, 53 great-grand-children and two great-great-grandchildren. Each one had a personal relationship with her, and she never forgot a birthday. She taught correct principles in her home and lived her life by those principles.
She was always an example of love, faith, courage, commitment and service, and her life radiated the light of the gospel of Jesus Christ. She recently celebrated her 90th birthday, full of energy and brightness, with a reunion of more than 150 family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years in 2002, her sister Maxine Mott, and two infant brothers. She is survived by her brothers Brent, Max, Keith, Myron, Royal and Richard, and her sister Mary; her children and their spouses, Kathy Farnsworth (Darwin), Kenneth Thiess (Nancy), Robert Thiess (Linda), Barbara Despain (Eric), Debbie Geslison (Craig), and Lori Hadlock (Lynn); plus her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, September 27, 2008 at 11 a.m. in the Lindon 1st Ward Chapel, 56 East 600 North, Lindon, UT.
