British Officer; Victoria Cross Awardee. Shaw was born in Madras, India, on February 4, 1839. He was educated at Sandhurst, and by the age of 16, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant. In 1855 he served in the Crimean War. Two years later, in 1857, he saw action in the Indian Mutiny and from 1864 to 1866, he fought at Nakuman in New Zealand. In the battle on January 24, 1865, together with 4 other soldiers, while under intense enemy fire, Shaw entered within meters of bushes on enemy occupied territory, and managed to bring a wounded soldier back to safety. Shaw's action won him the Victoria Cross. Later, Shaw married Emily Grace Sheffield in 1870. He died in Southsea, Portsmouth, England on August 25, 1904. Military career: Second Lieutenant 1855, Major 1877, Adjutant of North Tipperary Militia Jun 1873 to Feb 1878, Lieutenant-Colonel 1881, Colonel in September 1885, Awards; Victoria Cross January 24, 1865 – medal kept in the National Army Museum, London.
