| Birth: | Oct. 23, 1762 Preston New London County Connecticut, USA | | Death: | Aug. 8, 1851 |  Samuel was the 6th of 10 children (3rd son) born of Samuel Coit (1733-1896) and his wife Mercy Clark (1727-1800). His siblings were: Sarah (1755-1826), Mercy (1756-1790), Jeremiah (1757-1757), Solomon (1759-1776), Bethany (b. 1760), Joseph (b. 1764), James (b. 1768), Mary (b. 1770), and Clark (1772-1844).
Samuel, at the age of 19 years, entered Captain James Averil's (3rd) Company of the Town of Preston, New London County, Connecticut, Colonel Nathan Gallup's 27th Regiment, of Connecticut Militia, as a Private, June 6, 1781 and served 3 days. Captain Averil's Company marched to Fort Griswault on Groton Heiths. This alarm occurred at the time of the burning of New London, New London County, Connecticut and the massacre of the garrison of Fort Griswold on Groton Heights, on the opposite bank of the river, by the British forces led by Benedict Arnold.
Samuel married, June 25, 1785, in Norwich, Windsor County, Vermont, Mary Burton by whom he had 9 children: James b. 1789), Daniel (b. 1792), Blily (1795-1800), Mary (b. 1797), Bethany (b. 1799), Daniel (b. 1801), William (b. 1803), Zebina (1805-1886), and Daphne (1808-1849).
