John Henry Wortman, son of Herman Henry and Minnie Wortman was born at Friendship, Indiana, November 9, 1859 and departed this life January 5, 1942, at Ruskin, Nebraska, having attained the age of 82 years, 1 month and 27 days.

In infancy he was received into the communion of the Triune God through the rite of Holy Baptism. In early youth he received religious training in a Christian day school, after which he was confirmed in the Christian faith by the Rev. W. Brokhage of St. Pauls Evangelic Lutheran Church of Bear Creek, Switzerland county, Indiana.

In 1879 Mr. Wortman moved to Missouri where on December 30, 1883, he was married to Mary Elizabeth Crumley; later in 1884, they moved to Ruskin, Nebraska, where they had resided since, Mrs. Wortman having preceded him in death January 24, 1928.

Nine children were born to this union, one (Harry) having died in infancy. The following sons and daughters were present: Jesse H., Allie M. and Mrs. Arthur Sykes of Ruskin; Hattie E. and Mrs. Robert Knowles of Superior; Charles F. of Cutbank, Montana; Elmer J., Los Angeles, California; and Mrs. Knud Henriksen of Ludington, Michigan. He also leaves to mourn his loss, three sisters, Henry F. Wortman of Friendship, Indiana; and twenty-one grandchildren and five great grand children.

Funeral services were held at the Community Church in Ruskin, Nebraska January 8th, conducted by the Rev. Henry Dumler of Davenport, Nebraska, using a portion of the Book of Job. Interment in the Ruskin cemetery.

The pallbearers were Dan Windhorst, Fred Maschman, George Thomas, Albert Gade, Henry Wall and Ernest Nelson.

Relatives and friends from out of town attending the funeral were: Mrs. Lelia Murdock, Council Bluffs, Iowa; Mis Ioma Crumley, Chicago, Ill.; Mrs. Minnie Wortman, Deshler; Emmerson Wortman, Hastings; Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Beolkha, Ayr; Mr. and Mrs. Tony Henriksen, Nelson; Albert Gade and daughter Doris, Garland; Mr. and Mrs. George Thomas, Hebron; Mrs. Hollis Barber, Hebron.
