Came to America with sons John, Mathias and daughter Barbara. His son Jacob had already come to the US in 1849 and his wife had died in 1850 (in Germany). Arrived in port of New York on 23 Sept 1852 on ship Atlantic.

"A Calvaryman of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. Served in the Grand Armee in the invasion of Russia 1812, under Marshall Murat, King of Naples. Awarded the Cross of the Legion of Honor.
Born Rachtig, Berncastel.
Died Menasha, Wisconsin.
Erected by the Menasha Historical Society 1958"
