Eighty-seven Years of Age - One of the Oldest Men in the County

Nelson Merritt, one of the most prominent and highly respected citizens of Arcadia, passed away at his home there at 2:30 Sunday afternoon, at the age of 87 years and 18 days. He was one of the oldest men of the community and had been in fairly good health for one of his years, until the past year, since which time he was almost blind and unable to leave his home, but not until Thursday was he confined to his bed. But few knew that his condition was alarming.

He was born near Bridgeport, Marion county, on February 20th, 1831, the son of James and Sarah Merritt, and when 8 years old came to this section of the country and experienced all the hardships of the pioneer settlers. Amongst his nearest neighbors were Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Wright and he chose their daughter, Jane Wright, as his bride, and they were married Jan. 27th, 1863. Two children came to the home, but both died in infancy and the two foster sons, John Wright and James Batton departed this life many years ago.

Almost a half century ago, they united with the Christian church at Omega and were faithful attendants as long as their health permitted. Their early life was spent of their farm, northeast of Arcadia, until 25 years ago, when they retired and went to Arcadia for residence. The have been a remarkable couple, having lived together for more than 57 years. Mrs. Merritt is past 83 years of age and the loss of her companion will fall heavily upon her. His mother died many years ago and his father married again and of the family his is survived by only one half sister, Mrs. Louisa Cummings, of Indianapolis, and a step brother, Samuel Evans, of near Omega.
