obit "The Anita Tribune", Anita, Cass Co, Iowa, 6/28/1934
David Yarger, 85, retired farmer, pioneer resident of Massena and a well known man, passed away at 6:20 Saturday morning at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. Herman Eden, five miles northeast of Atlantic, from injuries received a few days ago while felling a tree near Massena. Mr. Yarger suffered a face laceration, a sprained shoulder and painful body bruises when he was pinned under the tree. He apparently was getting along splendidly until Thursday when he suffered a relapse and had been in a critical condition until his death. The aged man was helping two of his nephews chop down a tree. When the tree toppled over, Mr. Yarger was unable to get away fast enough and was pinned beneath the branches.
He had been a resident of the Massena community for more than a half century. He was born in Pennsylvania on August 20, 1849. Mr. Yarger and Miss Anna Leckington were united in marriage at Waterloo, Iowa, on December 31, 1871. Following their marriage they located on a farm near Massena, retiring several years later. Mrs. Yarger died on March 7, 1902. Three daughters, Mary, Sarah and Clara, preceded him in death. Surviving are five children, Daniel Yarger of Redondo Beach, California, Silas Yarger of Ontario, California, Mrs. H.E. Stone of Des Moines, Mrs. Walter Van Brocklin of Parade, South Dakota, and Rollie Yarger of Omaha, Nebraska. A large number of grandchildren and great grandchildren survive.
