Old family papers suggest that Caroline's grandmother, Susannah Cooper, was 1/2 Cherokee Indian, although this has not been proven.
Mr. Carter passed away when Caroline was quite young. Her mother married again, this time to William Jefferson Lee. Caroline had 3 half-siblings from that union.
