| Birth: | Feb. 17, 1831 | | Death: | Aug. 22, 1875 |  Civil War Union Army Officer. An 1851 graduate of the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York, he was serving in the 7th United States Regular Infantry when the Civil War broke out in April 1861. He was promoted to Captain on April 22, 1861, and served in that capacity until May 18, 1864, when he was promoted to Major of the 14th United States Regular Infantry. On October 31, he accepted a volunteer commission as Colonel and commander of 25th New York Volunteer Cavalry. He led that unit in the field until February 10, 1865, when he resigned from the volunteers and reverted back to his Regular Army rank. Remaining in the Army after the conclusion of the war, he retired in January 1869 while serving as Major of the 32nd United States Regular Infantry. He resided in Culpeper, Virginia, where he passed away in 1875. His father-in-law was Union Brigadier General Gabriel R. Paul.
