He was born near Dublin, Ireland, and became a Surgeon General in the Royal Regiment of Artillery. He served in New Zealand from 1860 to 1866 where he took part in the Waikato-Hauhau Maori War and saw action at Teairei, Rangiriri, and Rangiawhia. On November 20, 1863, at Rangiriri, New Zealand, during an attack on the Maori's positions and under the enemy's fire, he crossed the entrance to the Maori stronghold, while under intense enemy fire, in order to provide assistance to the wounded, for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross for extreme valor. From 1884 until 1889 he served in India as Lieutenant Colonel and as Secretary to the Surgeon-General of the Indian Army Medical Services. On April 10, 1885, he became Brigade Surgeon and from 1886 until 1889 was Honorary Surgeon to His Excellency, the Viceroy of India.
