Died, at the family residence, 1219 South Sixth street, at 11:30 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 1, 1907, of brain trouble and complications, Marshall Sattley, aged 75 years, 2 months and 21 days. Deceased has been ill for a long time, suffering more or less for a year, though his condition has not been regarded critical until within the last three or four weeks, during which time he gradually grew weaker.
Marshall Sattley was one of the best known residents of the city and county, and was born on a farm near Rochester, Ill., Oct. 24, 1831, the son of Archibald and Harriet Hawley Sattley, both of whom were natives of Vermont. In 1818 his father reabode in the village of Rochester in 1819. He learned the blacksmith's trade in Rochester under the direction of Abraham Nichols, entering upon a three years' apprenticeship in 1848. When he had completed this term of service he embarked in business for himself in October, 1851, as manufacturer of plows and agricultural implements, establishing his enterprise on a small scale in Rochester, where he remained until 1857. About this time he disposed of his blacksmith shop in Rochester and went to Decatur.
In 1858 he moved from Decatur and established a business in Taylorville in which place he remained until 1889, when he and his brother, S. E. Prather, established the Sattley Manufacturing company, which from a very modest beginning grew to be one of the most important business enterprises in the west. On the 5th of Nov. 1857, Mr. Sattley was united in marriage to Miss Ruth A. Prather of Sangamon county; a native of Maryland.
The Sattley plow works in this city developed year after year, until 1903 when this company merged with the Racine Manufacturing company of Racine, Wis., the merged corporation bearing the name of the Racine-Sattley Manufacturing company of which Marshall Sattley was elected vice president.

MARY, born Dec. 31, 1822, in Sangamon county, was married Jan. 16, 1845, in Rochester, to Thomas Cheney. They had four children, two died young.

CHARLES, born Oct. 9, 1850, in Taylorville, was married there, Jan. 30, 1872, to Jennie Murphy, who was born July I, 1850, in Christian county, Illinois. They live in Taylorville, Illinois.
Thomas Cheney died Sept. 6, 1854, and his widow married Matthew E. Long.
