He married 1st on 3 July 1845 to Mrs. Mahala V. (COX) POPE, widow of John POPE. She died 15 Aug 1854; and he married 2nd on 15 Oct 1857 at Perry Co., Indiana to Miss Alice SPILMAN, dau. of Harvey and Mary (MASON) SPILMAN.
He Graduated in 1846 from DePauw University at Greencastle, Indiana, A. B. : A. M.
From 1843-56 his occupation was "teacher". "In the fall of 1856 his future brother-in-law, Jerome SPILMAN, began a select school in the Lutheran Church. That same year, Reverend John LAVERTY, a Methodist minister, taught several terms of excellent school in the stone house." HISTORY of WARRICK, SPENCER and PERRY COUNTIES, INDIANA (Goodspeed Bros., Chicago 1885), p.711.
From 1851-1853 he served a term as a member of the Indiana Legislature.
In 1853 He entered the Indiana Methodist Episcopal Conference and was appointed to Spencer Circuit : 1854-55, Gosport : 1855-57, Cannelton : 1857-58, Owensville : 1858-59, New Harmony : 1859, Prarieton : 1860--61, New Lebanon : 1861-62, and Washington, IN : 1863.
In 1864 he transferred to the Upper Iowas Conference and was appointed to Iowa City : 1865-66, Epworth : 1866-67 and Center Grove, Iowa.
He relocated on account of Ill health and resided in Worthington, Indiana until the fall id 1879 when he re-entered the INdiana Conference and was appointed to Bowling Green : 1880, New Ark : 1881, Corey : 1882, FArmersburg : 1883, and Oaktown, Indiana : 1884.
He "superannuated" (retired) and removed to Long Pine, Nebraska where the DePauw Univ. Alumni record states that he died. He is buried at Indianola, Warren Co., Iowa where his parents are buried.
His second wife and widow, Alice (SPILMAN) LAVERTY, died 10 June 1918 at Hennepin County, Minnesota and is buried at Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis.
In 1973 the LAVERTY family Bible was in the possession of John Laverty's granddaughter, Marion (NUTTING) DALE of Jacksonville, Florida. She died 8 May 1989 and is buried at Lakewood in Minneapolis.
