John W. Moran enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1861 as part of Company I 31st Tennessee Regiment. He started as a Private then was Regimental 1st Sergeant. He then became 1st Lieutenant. He surrendered in North Carolina with the Army of Tennessee at the end of the war in May 1865.
He was paroled and allowed to go home. After the war, he earned money loading steamboats at Hickman, Kentucky to start his own business in Dresden, Tennessee. He earned enough money to buy a store of his own and was a merchant selling dry goods. He then helped to found the Bank of Dresden in the 1880's. He was a prominent citizen of the town and participated in many of the reunions of Confederate Veterans in Weakley County.
