He stayed with the family until August 15, 1864 when at the age of 20, he enlisted with the Union Army, Company "H", 45th Regiment of Missouri Infantry Volunteers. Later he was transferred to Company "B" , 48th Regiment, Missouri Volunteers. Julius was mustered out with his Company on June 24, 1865.
Julius farmed and operated a water mill on the Lamine River below Mastin's Bridge near Clifton City, Missouri. He lived an isolated and eccentric life, but resided not far from his siblings and mother. After many years of poor health, Julius died of consumption on March 16, 1906 and was interred in the Pleasant Green Methodist Church Old Cemetery. Recently, the Veterans Administration provided a headstone for Julius that was placed near the location of other known Warden graves. According to Julius' will, he requested that his real estate and personal property be sold, his debts paid, and the balance bequeathed to his sisters, Frances and Sarah.

Research of Marriage: Missouri State Archives searched Morgan County Index to Marriages Book 2, 1860-1893, and Book 3, 1881-1888, and Cooper Co Index 1875-1890 and found no record for Julius Warden.
