Martha Elizabeth (Thomas) Richardson was the wife of Henry Clayton Richardson and the daughter of David Moses Thomas & Margaret N. (Wallace) Thomas. Her parents are buried in the Thomas Cemetery, near North English, IA. Her husband Henry Clayton Richardson is also buried in the Thomas Cemetery.
It has been said that when Elizabeth Thomas & Henry C. Richardson married, Elizabeth's father gave them 40 acres of good land. One day Henry decided to pull up stakes and travel to South Dakota where he & his wife homesteaded near Midland, Haakon Co., South Dakota. He left in such a hurry that he left livestock in the field unattended. After his wife died in Midland, South Dakota, he moved back to North English, IA.
Martha Elizabeth (Thomas) Richardson and Henry Clayton Richardson were the parents of twelve children: Irene Belle, who died at age 5, Willis A. "Bill", Bessie Alice, Lodena Elzora "Jiggs", Margaret D. "Jen", Ollie, Carrie, James Wallace "Bud", Henry Clayton "Hike", Rollie Espey, Infant boy buried along the trail somewhere, & George Robert "Pete" Richardson. Henry Clayton "Phebe" Richardson had wander lust. He was a traveling sales person and sold singer sewing machines. It is said that he travel every state in the Union. It was hard on his wife Elizabeth traveling with all the children and when she lost the baby boy she was depressed. Her husband thought that it was her reading the Bible that caused her illness so he burnt the family Bible.
