Graveside service: 3 p.m. Thursday in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Forest Hill Baptist Church in Quitman.
John was born Sept. 23, 1915, in Farmington, Maine, to Sara and Walter Backus. He graduated from Farmington High School. He served his country during World War II as a pharmacist assistant. Following the war, he attended several colleges, finally earning his bachelor's degree in animal husbandry. He and his wife settled in Underhill, Vermont, for 30 years where he operated a dairy farm, taught school and worked for General Electric. Following their retirement in 1980, they moved back to Texas and have lived in Quitman since then. During their marriage of 60 years, the couple was instrumental in the development of the following Southern Baptist churches: South Burlington Baptist Church, which was the first Southern Baptist church in Vermont, and Immanuel Baptist Church in Winnsboro, Texas. They were also active members of Forest Hill Baptist Church in Quitman.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Mattie Ruth Riddle Backus, in 2005 at the age 92.
Survivors: Niece, Sonja Dildy and husband, Charles, of Azle; nephew, Larry Don Riddle and wife, Diane, of Lake Worth; brother, Wayne Backus and wife, Vestena, of Wilton, Maine; and several other nieces and nephews and their families, all of Maine.
