Obert was born Oct. 27, 1913, in the town of Hale, Trempealeau County, at the home of his parents, Ludvig O. and Ruth Mortenson Goplin. He attended grade school at the Huskelhus country school, graduating in 1927; after receiving his eighth-grade diploma, Obert stayed home for a year and then went on to graduate from Whitehall High School in 1932.
At 34 years of age, Obert married Adeline Lundberg; they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this past June. Pigeon Falls Evangelical Lutheran Church was a focal point of his family life, and Obert took his turn to serve as trustee on the church council, sing in the choir, serve as usher and be a member of the Men's Brotherhood organization.
Farming was a way of life for Obert, and from childhood to retirement he witnessed the arrival of electricity to rural America and tractors replacing his mighty Percheron workhorses. While farming, Obert was a member of the Pigeon Falls local of the Trempealeau County Farmers Union, and he served as its treasurer for a number of years. He supported the local cooperatives whenever possible, and was a member of the Farmers Union Co-op, Tri-State Breeders Co-op and REA Co-op.
Obert was a member of Landings Lag, the Norskedalen and, for more than 25 years, the Sons of Norway Tryggvason Lodge. He was fluent in the Norwegian language and was able to visit Norway in 1981 and 1989. Obert joined the senior bowlers in his 80s and enjoyed the weekly outing until the week before his death.
Obert is survived by his wife of 60 years, Adeline; four children, Paul (Anne) Goplin of Osseo, Carolyn (Kieth) Eilertson of Austin, Minn., Sigrid (David) Congos of Shawano, and Eric (Jackie) Goplin of Osseo; 11 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Helen Myhre of Osseo; and one brother-in-law, Obert Lundberg of Osseo.
Obert was preceded in death by his parents, Ludvig and Ruth; two sisters, Margaret (Odell) Schansberg and Florence (Willie) Johnson; sister-in-law, Freda (Henry) Boettcher; and brother-in-law, Ernest Myhre.
