| Birth: | Nov. 25, 1940 Maywood Cook County Illinois, USA | | Death: | Apr. 9, 1942, Philippines | This memorial remembers the Illinois National Guardsmen who were called to federal service as members of Hq Company & B Company, 192nd Tank Battalion on November 25, 1940. After living through the Japanese attack on Clark Airfield on December 8, 1941, December 7th in the United States, the 192nd Tank Battalion fought to slow Japan's conquest of the Philippine Islands. On December 22, 1941, at Lingayen Gulf, a platoon of B Company tanks fought the first tank battle of World War II involving American tanks. Pfc Henry Deckert, of B Company, became the first American killed in tank to tank action in WWII on that date. On April 9, 1942, most of the members of both companies became Prisoners of War when Bataan was surrendered to the Japanese. They took part in what has become known as the Bataan Death March. Many of the soldiers would later die in Japanese POW camps or on unmarked POW ships that were sunk by American submarines. In all, 56 men would never return home. Each September since 1942, on the second Sunday of the month, the Maywood Bataan Day Organization has held a memorial service to honor the members of the 192nd Tank Battalion and all those who fought on Bataan.
