President of Laos. He served as president of Laos from 1992 to 1998, and was a founding member of the Laos Communist Party. He was appointed president of Laos following the death of President Kaysone Phomvihane. He was recognized as the number two political figure in the People's Revolutionary Party for over four decades beginning in the late 1950s, and also served as the nation's vice prime minister and finance minister.
