William L. "Bill" Haverkamp, 68, of Seneca, died Monday morning, August 21, 2006, at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka of an apparent heart attack. He was transferred there earlier the same morning after receiving emergency care at the Nemaha Valley Hospital in Seneca. He was born September 8, 1937, on a farm northeast of Kelly, the son of George F. and Evelyn M. Winkler Haverkamp. He grew up there, helped on the family farm, graduated from St. Bede's Grade School and St. Bede's High School in Kelly in 1955. He farmed, and from 1955 to 1957 worked for Koelzer Lumber, and also on highway and road construction for a private company. In 1961 he went to work for O.A. Cooper Co. as a salesman. He started his own dealership in 1962 where he sold feed and livestock equipment.. In 1985 crop insurance was added and he also sold Travelong and Eagle trailers.
On June 18, 1957, he married Patricia Fangman at St. Mary's Church at St. Benedict. They lived in Seneca where they raised their family. Bill and Pat continued to be active in their business. He was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Church and the St. Joseph Society at the church. He was a former member of the Sts. Peter & Paul School Board and served as the president. Bill enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing, and horseback riding.
Survivors besides his wife, Patricia, of the home are eight sons, Bill J. of Hoyt, Justin of Stillwell, twins, Dale of Wichita, and Dean of Tampa, FL, Patrick of Seneca, Bruce of Topeka, Doug and Scott, both of St. George; two daughters, Juanita Koelzer of Kearney, MO and Marilyn Engelken of Frankfort; three brothers, Avitus of Wetmore, Melvin and George J., both of Seneca; a sister, Georgina Holthaus of Baileyville; and 21 grandchildren and 2 step-grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a twin brother, Robert L. Haverkamp on January 23, 2005.
The mass of Christian burial will be 10 AM Thursday at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca. The burial will be in the church cemetery. Rosaries will be prayed at the Lauer Funeral Home at 2 and 7 PM Wednesday. Memorials maybe given for Sts. Peter & Paul School or Sts. Peter & Paul Church and sent in care of the family.
