Charles R. Rhoades, age 82, of Perry, Il. died Wednesday evening (September 10, 2008) at his residence. He was born October 17, 1925 in southeastern Adams County, Il. son of the late Oliver Merle "Merle" and Rachel Waters Rhoades. He married Susan Roberta Webel on October 28, 1945 in Brown County, Il. and she survives.

Also surviving is a daughter, Susan Rebecca "Becky" Phillips and husband Lloyd of Barry, Il.; three sons, twins Gregory and Philip Rhoades both of Perry, Il. and Matthew Rhoades of Washington, D.C.; two grandchildren, Brandon Phillips of Quincy, Il. and Amber Cook and husband Scott of Elgin, Il.; and a great-granddaughter, Rachel Phillips of Barry, Il. He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant sister.

Mr. Rhoades graduated Perry High School in 1943, where he played baseball and basketball, especially loving baseball. He was a lifelong fan who followed the Chicago Cubs. He served on the Perry High School Board of Education from 1964-1972 and served on the Pike County Farm Service Board of Directors and was a 4-H leader in Fairmount Township for many years. Charles was an avid reader and followed current events and politics. He loved reading history and was extremely knowledgeable about the Civil War period.

Charles loved the outdoors including gardening and raising livestock. He loved all animals especially dogs and his favorite dog was a collie, Chip, who accompanied him everywhere on the farm and became expert at hog herding. He had a wonderful sense of humor, a great memory and was an adept story teller. Charlie told many stories about his childhood growing up in Adams and Pike counties during the Great Depression of the 1930's. One of his stories was from 1938 when he was coming home from the Fishhook school, came over the hill and saw the lights on in the farmhouse—the first time they had electricity. He was an incredible source of stories and information about local families and life in Pike County and rural America.

Services were entrusted to Airsman-Hires Funeral Home of Griggsville, Illinois.
