Bertha Mae Coffey Brown was the seventh of nine children born to William M. Coffey (1855-1932) and his wife Martha Jane Sharpe Coffey (1855-1935). She married Edward Brown (1899-1936) of Gaston Co. The couple had three daughters.
Ed worked in a cotton mill in Lincolnton before moving to a mill in Gastonia in his native county. After Ed's death in 1936, Bertha returned to Lincolnton and found work in a mill. She died of a pulmonary embolism at the age of eighty.
