Knoxville Cemetery made a mistake – they transcribed his name as Alonzo D May and accordingly all the records are under Alonzo D May. One of the earliest muster records had the name hypenated May-nard, and from that the Veterans Administration recorded his burial incorrectly under Alonzo May. Efforts to correct those records have not been successful so far.
Alonzo is the son of Benajah Maynard and Sally Howard Maynard, and is a great grandson of Peter BRANCH, Revolutionary Patriot; and also a Mayflower descendant.
The family bible reflects four children born to Sally and Benajah, Lucinda (10 Oct 1823), Alonzo (4 July 1825), Caroline (3 Aug 1827-6 Oct 1828) and Adaline (3 Aug 1830). When the Civil War broke out in 1861, enlistment records reflect Alonzo enlisted along with his father Benajah and his sister Adeline's husband Asher Bates.
