INDIAN HISTORIAN, COLLECTOR

Charles Eagle Plume of Estes Park, presider of the Charles Eagle Plume Trading Post and the Eagle Plume Collection, a nonprofit foundation, died Sept. 8 at the Prspect Park Nursing Home. he came to the Estes Park area in 1919 on horseback, and never left.
For years,Eagle Plume would dance and tell stories for tourists at Rocky Mountain National Park. He also became a lecturer on Indian history, touring the country to champion Indian rights and speak about Indian art and tradition.
Friends of Eagle Plume, as was his wish, established the Charles Eagle Plume Memorial Scholarship Fund to pay for the college education of an American Indian student.
A memorial service was held at the Allenspark Community Church.
Eagle Plume, also known as Charles F. Burkhardt, graduated from the University of Colorado in 1932. Eagle Plume served in the Army during World War ll on the South Pacific island of New Georgia. He wore many career hats, including those of entertainer, lecturer, businessman, philanthropist and collector. Eagle Plume was an inductee in the People of Estes Park Hall of Fame and received an honorary doctorate detree from the University of Colorado.
The Eagle Plume Collection, amassed over 75 years, is a testimonial to Eagle Plume's lifelong love and dedication to the arts of Native Americans.
There are no immediate family survivors.

Charlie was a friend of my mother. She very much cherished his friendship. We made many trips to his shop to visit him over the years. this picture of him in headdress is one he gave to her.RIP Charlie.
