Phelix Leonard "Tex" Houser was born on October 31, 1906. His name was originally spelled Felix, but he was teased by other children when the Felix the Cat cartoons became popular, so he convinced his mother to allow him to change his name legally. His siblings included Theodore, Rose, Carrie, Woodrow, Revis, Connie, and Herbert.
He married Dymple Barnett on Valentine's Day 1951, a second marriage for both of them. He had children from his first marriage, but he and Dymple had no children together. At one point they lived in Round Mountain, Texas, where they owned and operated a gas station/convenience store/post office. Eventually they settled in Blanco, Texas, where they spent the rest of their lives. Dymple developed severe rheumatoid arthritis in her later years, and Tex took excellent care of her until she died. He died January 10, 2000 and is buried in Austin Memorial Park in Austin, Texas.
