He enlisted in the Army on March 13, 1941, prior to the war, in Portland, Maine. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Farm Hand and also as Single, without dependents.

Franklin died in the "Line Of Duty" of a non-battle related incident during the war. He died somewhere in the U.S., possibly during training, since the 43rd Infantry did not go overseas until October 1, 1942.
