A DUEL WITH KNIVES.

Out in the village of Lane they had a meeting of a literary society a couple of weeks ago which ended in a duel with blunt jack-knives. Prof. Gray, the school teacher, and Dick Smallwood got into an altercation over some trivial matter, and nothing but murder would satisfy Dick's honor. Both parties went at each other hip and thigh, and by the time they were separated they looked as if they had been run through a reaper and mower. Smallwood was badly cut about the head and face, and Gray had one hand severely cut. The fight was brought to this city for Justice McHenry to act as umpire, and the trial came off last Saturday. About one-third of the population was in as witnesses or lookers-on. As it was proven that Dick Smallwood was the aggressor Justice McHenry fined him $10 and added $50 more for costs.

CLINTON MAN THREATENS WIFE:
R. Smallwood chard with Attempting to Shoot Former Spouse:
Clinton: Jan. 24. - Richard Smallwood, contractor, was arrested late last night on a charge of attempting to shoot his former wife, Mrs. Ollie Smallwood, 320 East Adams St. He was placed under a bond of $2,500 and is now in the DeWitt County jail.
It is alleged that Mr. Smallwood went to the home of his former wife to visit his children as he occasionally does, in a drunken condition Sunday afternoon. He performed in such a manner that he was informed he would have to go if he persisted in his acts, but that he would be welcome if he came there sober and acted in a civil manner. He became infuriated and pulled an automatic revolver from his pocket, and it is said, attempted to shoot Mrs. Smallwood. His attempt was frustrated however, by members of the family after which he was put out of the house.
Warrants for his arrest were issued late yesterday by State's Attorney Smith and he was later arrested and placed in jail by Constable Charles Shinneman.
