He was the first of the seven children born to James Leak and Lula Garrish Little. He graduated from Rockingham High School. After high school, he enlisted in the US Navy. He served in both WWII and the Korean War. He attended Duke University. At the age of 39, while serving in Cuba, he crossed paths with another Naval Officer, Lt. Comm. Emma H. Lichtenwald, of the Navy Nurses' Corps. She introduced herself to him as Mary, and he called her Mary their whole marriage. He spent 20 years as Contract Director for the Naval Facilities Engineering Command in Washington, D.C. Brother to William, Betty Lou, and Sarah.
