Born Carmine Orlando Tilelli, he began his career as a middleweight Philadelphia, Pennsylvania-based fighter in 1948. On December 7, 1963, at age 33, he won the World Middleweight Championship title with a 15-round unanimous decision over Dick Tiger. He successfully defended the title against Rubin "Hurricane" Carter before losing it to Tiger in late 1965. He retired in 1967, with a record of 101 wins, 25 losses, 7 draws and 33 knockouts.
