Alice Lucinda Willis Gray was born to John Pinckney Willis, age 27, and Lucy Jane Lamb Willis, age 24, on September 19, 1893 in Chipola, Calhoun County, Florida. Alice was the fifth child of 14 children born to the Willis family, 13 in Florida and 1 in Texas.
It is possible that Alice's middle name Lucinda came from her paternal grandmother's name that was Lucinda Richards Willis.
In the 1900 U.S. Census, Alice was 6 and her family lived at Pippins Mill, Calhoun County, Florida. Family members at that time were John P. Willis, 34, wife Lucy J. Willis, 31, oldest son John J. Willis, 11, oldest daughter Mary A. Willis, 9, third son William J. Willis, 7, second daughter Alice L. Willis, 6, fourth son Jesse L. Willis, 5, third daughter Cecilia V. Willis, 3,and fifth son Charles D Willis, 1. The father John P. Willis was a farmer. Second son George Washington Wills passed away as a child in 1893.
By the 1910 U.S. Census, the family moved to Antrim Community, NW of Grapeland in Houston County, Texas. Alice was 16 and five other children were born into the family: fourth daughter Ludie Willis, 9, fifth son Marvin Willis, 7, sixth son Purley Willis, 6, seventh son Guy Willis, 4, and eighth son Alton Willis, 2. The father John P. Willis was a general farmer. After the 1910 U.S. Census youngest child and fifth daughter Lois Willis was born in 1910.
In 1913, at age 19, Alice Lucinda Willis married Richard Lusky Gray, age 20 in Anderson County, Texas. In 1914, Alice and Lusky Gray paid their poll taxes each year from 1914-1926 at Elkhart in Anderson County, Texas.
In 1914, Alice and Richard had their first child, a daughter who lived for 1 day. She was unnamed and was buried at Antrim Cemetery in Houston County, Texas.
Their second child and oldest living daughter, Lois Azalee Gray, was born in 1915. Their third child and second oldest living daughter, Opal Murriel Gray, was born in 1916. Their fourth child and oldest living son, Cecil Newell Gray was born in 1918. Their fifth child and son, Sherman Lusky Gray, was born in 1922 and passed away in 1927. Their sixth child and third living daughter, Ava Maxine Gray, was born in 1924.
In the 1920 U.S. Census Alice and Lusky Gray lived at Elkhart in Anderson County, Texas with four of their children: Azalee, Murriel, Newelll, and Sherman.
The family moved to Conroe in Montgomery County, Texas and paid their water bills, street taxes, and Poll Taxes in Conroe from 1926-1930.
By the 1930 U.S. Census Alice and Lusky Gray's family lived in Montgomery County, but outside the city limits of Conroe with their four children: Azalee, 14, Murriel, 13, Newell, 11, and Maxine, 5.
In 1934-1937 Alice and Lusky Gray lived at Cold Springs in San Jacinto County, Texas and paid the San Jacinto Poll Tax, Cold Springs ISD Tax, and Personal Property Tax at the county seat which is Cold Springs.
In 1938-1978, Alice and Lusky Gray paid the Liberty County Poll Taxes, Cleveland ISD Taxes, and Real Estate Taxes.
At the time of Alice Lucinda Willis Gray's passing, she was survived by her children Lois Azalee Gray Snow, Opal Murriel Gray Hollingsworth, Cecil Newell Gray, and Ava Maxine Gray Gandy Jones, their spouses, and 14 grandchildren. Alice was survived by one sister, Lois Inez Willis Spurgeon. Alice outlived all of her other 12 brothers and sisters even though eight of them were born after she was born.
