ARTHUR BURNS CADWALADER November 7, 1914 - December 13, 2003 died in Oakland on December 13, 2003, surrounded by his beloved wife and daughters. He was Barbara's cherished husband for 50 years, loving father to daughters Lisa and Lynn Cadwalader and daughter and son-in-law Sara and Tim Windsor. His devoted grandchildren, Jason and Brian Windsor, and Zhanna and Alma Cadwalader, will dearly miss their "Papa". Burns was born in Peonia, Colorado. His family moved to Oregon, later settling in King City, California where he graduated from high school. He attended the University of California at Berkeley where he studied architecture. He served in the European Theater during World War II as a Captain in the Army Corps. of Engineers. He was licensed to practice architecture in 1957 and was a founding partner in the firm of Ratcliff Slama Cadwalader, now known as the Ratcliff Architects, where Burns continued to practice until his retirement in 1992. Burns was active in numerous environmental, professional and civic organizations in the Bay Area and taught architectural courses at U.C. Extension and at Cogswell College in San Francisco. Burns was a longtime member of the American Institute of Architects, served as President of the East Bay Chapter, and was inducted into the College of Fellows in 1980. In his retirement Burns enjoyed traveling, walking on favorite trails, and special time with his family and grandchildren in the home he loved as he continued to sing his way through life. A memorial service in celebration of Burn's life will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, December 20, 2003, at St. John's Episcopal Church, 1707 Gouldin Road, in Oakland. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Burns' memory to the charity of your choice.
