Civil War Union Army Soldier. He served during the Civil War as a Private in Company C, 2nd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. He was wounded in action on July 3,1863 at the Battle of Gettysburg, and died of those wounds at the 1st Division, XII Corps Hospital.

He was buried with his fallen comrades from Massachusetts in the Gettysburg National Cemetery. His family erected a cenotaph for him in the family plot in Hamilton Cemetery, Hamilton, Essex County, Massachusetts.
