Dr. Paul J. Campanella was born Jan. 28, 1912, in Bristol, R.I., son of Joseph and Antoinette Ferro Campanella. He graduated from Colt High School, Bristol, in 1930, attended Rhode Island College for two years, transferring to Syracuse University in 1932. He attended Syracuse University College of Medicine from 1934 to 1938, doing a rotating internship for a year at St. Joseph's Hospital, Syracuse. He did his residency at New York Foundling Hospital and St. Ann's Maternity Hospital for pediatrics and obstetrics from 1939 to 1940. He then had a medical practice in Fulton for a short while before entering the Army in 1941.

He served as a captain in the Army during World War II. He served a year with the Army Medical Reserve Corps at Camp Croft, S.C., trained at Massachusetts General Hospital for treatment and surgery of extremities, returned to Camp Croft and was assigned to the 4th Auxiliary Surgical Group. He trained at Lawson General Hospital, Atlanta, Ga., and was then assigned to the Third Army under the command of Gen. George Patton and was sent to Boston for embarkation. He left Boston for Scotland in April 1944 and was part of six teams who landed on Utah Beach, Normandy, in 1944. He served in the European theater of operations and was honorably discharged on Dec. 2, 1945. He received commendations from Gen. Jacob L. Devers and Gen. Patton.

He married Hazel A. Sovie on June 12, 1939, at Holy Family Church, Fulton. She died March 29, 1969. He married Patricia Doherty MacMartin on Nov. 6, 1969, in Ogdensburg.

Dr. Paul J. Campanella opened a general practice in 1946 in Ogdensburg, operating that until 1977. He was director of anesthesia at A. Barton Hepburn Hospital from 1947 to 1977. Following his retirement in 1977 he was a consulting physician for St. Lawrence NYSARC for 15 years, medical consultant for United Cerebral Palsy Association for five years, and medical director for an alcohol and drug abuse program for three years.

He was a member of the American Medical Association, American Society of Anesthesiology and New York State Society of Anesthesiology. He was a member of the St. Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, and American Legion Post 69 in Ogdensburg and Post 79 in Massena.
