| Birth: | Nov. 29, 1729 | | Death: | Aug. 16, 1824 | Revolutionary War Patriot. Served as part of the Pennsylvania Sons of Liberty that persuaded the leaders of that state to support the Revolutionary position of Massachusetts in the early stages of the conflict. When the First Continental Congress convened in Philadelphia in 1774, he was named its Secretary, holding that position and honor through the entire Revolutionary War and through the Constitutional ratification process (1774 to 1789). He relinquished his office only when the new bi-cameral government was set in place by the United States Constitution in 1789. He was the one who informed George Washington of his election to the US Presidency, and his name is the only non-Delegate signature on the Declaration of Independence (which he signed in his capacity as Congressional Secretary).
