He was the son of William & Mary (Streeper) Idall. A farmer by trade, he stood 5' 6" tall and had dark hair and hazel eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he first enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg April 20, 1861, as a private with Co. D, 2nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 26, 1861. He then enlisted in Newport, Perry County, September 23, 1861, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 30 as a private with Co. H, 47th Pennsylvania Infantry. Seriously wounded at the battle of Pocotaglio Creek, he was hospitalized in nearby Hilton Head, South Carolina, where he succumbed to his injuries.
