Jacob Fritz was born in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, the son of Martin Luther and his wife, Marie Catherine Wildt Fritz. On 9 Apr 1812, he married Elizabeth Huffman, daughter of Daniel John and Christina Elizabeth Walter Huffman. The Huffmans had been previous residents of Bedford County, also. The Huffmans (the name was later corrected to Hoffman by most branches of the family) and Fritz families migrated to Irwin Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania by 1810 where most of Jacob and Elizabeth's children were born. The young Fritz family resided in Venango County, PA into the 1820s.
Jacob's father, Martin Luther Fritz, went westward about 1814 and settled in Wayne County, Ohio. By 1830, Jacob, Elizabeth and their family had moved to Guilford Township, Medina County, Ohio, where Elizabeth's uncle Phillip (Daniel's younger brother) Huffman had located from Venango County, Pennsylvania after being given a land grant for his service in the War of 1812.
Jacob and Elizabeth became the parents of Mary (Hutchinson), Amos, Catherine (Euhler), Phillip, Elizabeth (Stone), Barbara (Wideman), Samuel and an infant who died at birth in Pennsylvania. After Elizabeth's death, Jacob married Martha Ward, a native of Canada. Martha died in 1878 and Jacob moved to Newark, Michigan in Gratiot County to live with his son Philip, who had moved there with his family about 1867.
