US Supreme Court Associate Justice, US Congressman. He graduated from Princeton University in 1879, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1882 and proceeded to practice law in Dover, New Jersey. In 1895, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-fourth and Fifty-fifth Congresses and served until 1899, when he resigned to be a member of the New Jersey State Senate, serving (1899-1901). He was a associate justice of the supreme court of New Jersey, (1901-08) and chancellor of New Jersey, (1908-12). In 1912, President William H. Taft appointed Pitney to the Supreme Court of the United States and served ten years until he retired from the bench in 1922. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
