Russell Settles, 94, of California Street died at 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, at Columbus Health and Rehabilitation Center.
He retired from Amos-Thompson Veneer in Edinburgh in 1969 and was an employee of the former Mooney Tannery. He was of the Baptist faith.
Funeral will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Myers Funeral Service, Reed and Jewell Chapel on 25th Street, with the Rev. Mitchell J. Coggin officiating. Calling will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday and from 9:30 until service time Monday. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Bartholomew County.
Mr. Settles was born May 13, 1904, in Washington County, Ky., the son of Samuel and Phelina Harmon Settles. He married Madalyn McNear Nov. 17, 1923, in Jeffersonville. She died Sept. 8, 1982.
He is survived by daughters, Mary Helen Phillips, Ruth Doles, Alice Purtlebaugh and Emily Mabe, all of Columbus, and Barbara VanZandt of Tucson, Ariz.; sons, Charles R. and Robert M. Settles, both of Columbus; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Evelyn Catherine Settles; a grandson, Mike Pittman; three brothers and two sisters.
