Richard Benneham Haywood was born in 1819 in Raleigh, Wake County, NC, the youngest of 9 known surviving children (3 boys/6 girls) born to Sherwood Haywood and his wife, Eleanor Howard Hawkins. His father owned 3 plantations in NC and served as clerk of the North Carolina State Senate for over 10 years (1786-1798), and later an agent for the Bank of Newbern (New Bern) in Raleigh.

He is descended on both sides of his family tree from prominent and wealthy North Carolinians. He was the paternal grandson of Col. William Henry Haywood & Charity Hare; and gr-grandson of John Haywood & Mary "Lucy" Lovett, all from Edgecombe County, NC. His great grandfather, John Haywood, the founder of the family in North Carolina, was born in Christ Church Parish, near St. Michael's, in the Island of Barbadoes. He was the son of John Haywood, a younger brother of Sir Henry Haywood, a Knight and magistrate in the old country. The family patriarch settled in 1730 at the mouth of Conecanarie in Halifax, then a part of the great county of Edgecombe. He was Treasurer of the northern counties of the Province from 1752, until his death in 1758. He married Mary Lovett, by whom he had 7 children. On his mother's side, he is the maternal grandson of Philomen Hawkins, III and Lucy Davis, wealthy planter of "Pleasant Hill" plantation in Granville Co, NC.

Richard was only 10 years old when his father died in 1829. His mother never remarried and raised her children alone until her death in 1855. Richard would pursue higher education and later became a physician.

Dr. Haywood was 32 years old in 1851 when he married 21-year old Julia Ogden Hicks of New York City, daughter of the prominent John Gustavus Hicks and Lavinia Graham. Both the Hicks and Graham families have long roots in the Northeast, and she is descended from Robert Hicks, who settled at Plymouth, MA in 1621.

The Haywoods lived on Blount Street in Raleigh, but later moved to 127 E. Edenton Street where they built a Greek-Revival styled home, today known as the "Haywood-Marshall House", which is now on the historic register.

Richard and Julia would become parents to 10 known children, with only 8 surviving to adulthood: Sherwood (1853-1923), Graham (1854-1910), Silliman (1856-1856), Effie Hicks (1857), Lavinia Graham (1859), Howard (1861-1919), Eleanor (1863-1904), Marion Tilou (c. 1866), Marshall DeLancey (1871-1933), and Henrietta Young (1875-1879).

Dr. Haywood died in 1889 at age 70. His wife of 38 years remained a widow another 29 years until her passing in 1918 at age 88. The Haywoods are buried in Oakwood Cemetery with other family members.
