| Birth: | Aug. 20, 1755 Middleton Essex County Massachusetts, USA | | Death: | unknown | Edward was the fourth of five children (2nd son) born of Miles Putnam (1725-1800) and his wife Rachel Wilkins (bp. 1733).
In the summer of 1775, Edward served in Captain Jonathan Holman's Company, Colonel Ephraqim Doolittle's Massachsuetts Militia Regiment as a substitute for his brother Aaron (b. 1751) who had taken sick. Aaron had entered this service from Winchendon, Worcester County, Massaachusetts on April 26, 1775 for an eight month term. Edward, also of Winchendon, served for 3 or 4 months. At the end of the term, he was dismissed at Cambridge.
In June or July 1776, Edward went from Winchendon and served a five month term as a substitute for his father in Captain Benjamin Gate's Company, Colonel Jonathan Holman's Regiment raised from Worcester County, Massachusetts to reinforce the Continental Army. Captain Gate's Company of 91 men marched for New York City on July 18, 1776. At New Haven, Connecticut, they boarded a sloop and sailed to New York. After being there a short time, they were ordered on towards White Plains, Westchester County, New York. Edward was engaged in the Battle of White Plains. The Company's men were placed near a rail fence two deep on the left wing. When the enemy came over the wall, they fired upon them. The enemy at first gaveway, come on again and drove them into a retreat to some woods out of their way. Edward concluded the full term of this enlistment in the vicinity of White Plains and was dismissed.
Edward again entered the sevice at Winchendon as a volunteer in a Massachusetts Militia unit for a term of six months. This unit marched to and was stationed at Albany, New York. Edward and others were sent north to Half Moon in Albany County, New York to chop wood. Here the soldiers began to have the smallpox. Many were carried away. Edward became sick with the smallpox, but he refused to go to the hospital. After becoming better, he worked some more at Half Moon and then he returned to Albany where he concluded his full term of enlistment, served an additonal month and was discharged.
Edward married, September 28, 1779 at Winchendon, Hannah Mastick. Soon after, they moved to Rockingham, Windham County, Vermont and later to Grafton, Windham County, Vermont.
