PLATTEVILLE, Wis. -- Margaret L. Bennett, 77, of Platteville, went home to be with her Lord Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008, surrounded by her loving family.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, at Westview Methodist Church, Platteville. Burial will be in Leadmine Primitive Methodist Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Melby-Bendorf Funeral Home, Platteville. Friends also may call after 10 a.m. Saturday at the church.
She was born on Sept. 8, 1930, in Leadmine, daughter of Benjamin and Louise (Hocking) Sheffer. She married her high school sweetheart, Robert Bennett, on July 22, 1950. Together they were blessed with five children.
Margaret was a lifelong member of the Primitive Methodist Church, spending the last 39 years with the Westview Methodist Church. She particularly enjoyed her involvement with the Women's Missionary Society, serving as their treasurer for many years. She led a life of service to others, befriending those who were often forgotten or overlooked. Her life of quiet service to others included volunteer work with the Meals at Home program, serving as a youth leader for her church and providing music at area nursing homes.
Margaret's greatest joy in life was her family, creating many lasting memories they will always cherish. Her sense of humor has enriched the lives of her family, teaching them the value of not taking one's self too seriously. Her grandchildren recall countless hours spent playing card and board games with their grandmother, instilling in them a competitive spirit and creative winning strategies. She loved to cook and boasted an enviable collection of cookbooks which she read like novels. Having played the piano for many years, she often provided accompaniment for her husband and passed on her love of music on to her children. Her other interests included playing computer games, bowling, spoiling her beloved dog, Pixie, and spending time with her family.
Surviving are her husband of 58 years, Robert Bennett; five children, Bruce (LaVonne) Bennett, of Leadmine, Jill (Nelson) Perkinson, of Benton, Douglas (Kay) Bennett, of Platteville, Joy Bennett, of Madison, and Kerri Anne (Kirk) LaDu, of Lake Geneva; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Donald; and a grandson, Zachary Bennett.
