from "The Childress County Story" 1970 - quote:

"Dr. Fred H. Cariker

For nearly fifty years, Fred Hancock Cariker, M.D. served the citizens of Childress and the surrounding area as a general practitioner. His dedication to his profession and interest in the growth and development of the community earned him the love and respect of many from far and near.

Dr. Cariker was born in Clayton (Panola County) Texas on July 19, 1896, the son of Fred William, M.D., and Maude (Hancock) Cariker. His father, also a general practitioner, was a typical county doctor of his day who traveled by horseback, horse and buggy, and later in a Model "T" Ford.

Dr. Cariker grew up in the sawmill town of Cushing, Texas, attended high school in Birmingham, Alabama and Henderson, Texas, and took his premedical training at the University of Texas. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Texas' Medical School in Galveston in 1919. He then interned at the John Sealy Hospital in Galveston until 1920.

After completion of his intern work, Dr. Cariker worked as a doctor in the oil fields near Wichita Falls, Texas, for several months, until he established a general practice in medicine and surgery in Childress in October, 1920. He had met Miss Edythe Priscilla Confer who was superintendent of the operating rooms at the John Sealy Hospital while he was attending medical school there. They were married in the nurses home of the hospital on December 16, 1920, and came to Childress to make their home. Mrs. Cariker was the daughter of Jefferson and Harriet Louise (Croupe) Confer of Watsontown, Pennsylvania. She entered nurses training at the Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia, on March 1, 1913. She came to Galveston as a registered nurse on August 1, 1918.

Dr. and Mrs. Cariker considered themselves pioneers in the field of medicine when they came to West Texas in 1920, and Mrs. Cariker later assisted her husband in his office for over twenty-five years. During his many years of service in the field of medicine he delivered countless numbers of babies and later on found himself delivering a second generation of babies before he retired. Even after he retired, many of his patients continued to seek his counsel and advice, in person, by letter, and on the telephone. He was popular as a speaker before various civic clubs, school groups, parent-teachers associations, graduation exercises, banquets and on radio broadcasts.

During World War II, Dr. Cariker served as the local examiner for the Childress Board of Selective Service from October, 1940 through March, 1947, for which he received certificates of appreciation from Presidents Roosevelt and Truman for his services. He served several terms as president of the Childress County Medical Society. He was also a member of the American Medical Association and held an honorary membership in the Texas Medical Association, of which he had been an active member for many years. An elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Childress, he had taught the men's adult Sunday School Class there for fifteen years. He was also a member of the Church Finance Board, and on many occasions served as lay preacher in the pulpit.

Dr. and Mrs. Cariker were the parents of two sons, Joe Williams and Fred Hancock, Jr. Joe married Koren Keever on October 29, 1949. They were the parents of three children, Deborah Kay, William Bruce, and Leigh Charles. They reside in West Columbia, Texas.

Fred Hancock, Jr. married Shirley Louise Schroeder on June 9, 1951. They are the parents of two daughters, Helen Priscilla and Edythe Louise. They reside in Amarillo, Texas.

Dr. Cariker died April 14, 1967." end quote
