Initially intending a career in classical music, she earned a degree from the Popular Arts School of Targoviste in 1986, then began making the rounds of every available talent contest. After receiving a contract from the Toma Caragiu Theatre in Ploiesti in 1989, she made her debut at the Mamaia Festival in 1990 singing Bogdan Cristinoiu's "Un actor grabit" ("Actor in a hurry"); her 1991 recording of the piece was to prove a hit, and establish her as a star. Laura appeared at Australia's International Pop Festival in 1992, and in 1994 released her first album "Focul" ("Fire"). She began touring at home and abroad, and in 1997 had her second disc, "Nici o stea" (Any Star"), published; Laura was awarded a degree in drama from the Ecological University of Bucharest in 2000, and between 2000 and 2003 was seen in the United States several times. In 2005, she produced her fifth-and-last record, "S-a schimbat". Laura was pregnant at the time of her death in a motor vehicle accident. Most of her recorded legacy, including two posthumous albums, "Da, Doamne, cantec" (2007) and the 2009 "Vino", and several videos, remains available. (bio by: Bob Hufford)
